Economic situations in our communities due to inflation, sickness and disease, unemployment, stagflation, and other economic factors can create difficult times for many people. If you are able to pay for someone else’s groceries, it would be a huge help. Before asking an individual that you know, you may consider making an anonymous gift. Some people can be sensitive about someone else paying for them.
If you want to help with someone’s groceries but you are not sure of who to help, contact your local grocery store or one nearby. The grocery store may work with you to choose someone randomly so it’s not as awkward for the recipient. On the other hand, you may decide to pay for the person’s groceries behind you at the checkout line. In this case, they won’t assume that you picked them because you think they look like they “need it”.
You may also talk with your local school to find out how you can help those in need. Some schools have a food pantry or work with a provider who would gladly use your donation to support more families. You may also decide to volunteer at your local food bank. Food banks a great resource for families in need.
TIPS
- People can be very sensitive about their financial situation. Please keep this in mind when you are preparing how you will give your gift.
- If you are going for a large gesture, definitely try and work it out with the location where you will be making your grocery gift, so it won’t disrupt the regular flow of foot traffic.
- Consider paying for someone near you at the grocery store while you are in line rather than trying to search for someone. No one should feel that they were chosen for this opportunity because of any identifying characteristics or social biases.
- As long as you are paying for someone on your own, you will not need to register your activity as an event with us. See disclaimer below.
