Host A Virtual Book Reading

Book readings are a great way to engage with your community and provide entertainment for your existing members. Consider having a special guest read a book whether a principal, retired teacher, or another person familiar with your audience. Board members who are looking to engage more with your programs or senior leaders in your organization may also get a kick out of reading to the kids. Since it’s virtual, you can provide a time that works for your volunteer reader and for parents.

Disclaimer: Please note that all events held in honor of National Day of Love® must be approved by our organization in writing. If you are planning to register to host an event, visit our FAQ’s page to find out more information. You can register to host an event or partner with us here.

If you decide to apply to host an event, consider choosing a book your readers are familiar with to make it more exciting for them. You may have read a book to them previously that they greatly enjoyed. On the other hand, you may choose to ask others for suggestions. Students, parents, staff members, or other interested parties make great sounding boards for your ideas. To make it more engaging for your audience, post a poll on your website or via email with a few book choices. Ask the parents to fill out the poll with their children to decide what book you will read on the National Day of Love®.

When the book choice is finalized and your event is approved, let your readers know with a fun email announcement to get children interested ahead of time. Children who are interested in your event are more likely to remind their parents to attend.

If you want to use an unpublished work of art for your story reading, consider hosting a short story contest. You can have participants write a short story and pick the winner’s book to read for online reading. You can have the winner read the book for the online event as a way to celebrate the writer. If the writer of the short story does not want to read online, you can offer to have his parent help read the story with them.

Consider having an activity or gift to go with your online book reading. You can email your activity to parents to print out or kindly ask them to pick up the activity at your nonprofit location. Remember to read the tips below and relevant information.

TIPS:

  • Consider having an activity or small gift (confetti, coloring picture, crossword, etc.) to go with your book reading. Make sure to give parents enough notice so they can print out or pick up your activity to go with the reading ahead of time.
  • The goal of the National Day of Love® is to celebrate love through giving. Consider choosing a book on love, unity, kindness, antibullying, friendship, family relationships, or other topics that embody love.
  • Please make sure you have licensing rights to read the book online or that you have obtained written permission from the book’s copyright holder. The copyright holder’s information should be on the inside cover of the book or the first few pages of the online book if the book is electronically printed. Before securing permission from the copyright holder, review sample permission letters to copyright holders online and/or talk with your nonprofit’s copyright attorney.
  • Registering your event may help you avoid potential copyright infringement. Also, your registration helps protect the vision and goals of National Day of Love®.
